A screened porch, a lemon tree, a room for my cards with a door that closed. He had the paint colors picked out. He never looked at a single listing, and he never put one date on a calendar. For years I called that the most romantic night of my life. It was a lovely night. It wasn’t evidence of anything. The sixth of the Six Evidences is practical effort, and it’s the one the date merchants never bring up. Love that’s ready enters the physical world: plans get made, money gets spent on the plan, a Saturday gets blocked out and kept. The other five are accountability, consistency, emotional availability, respect for boundaries, and shared intention. Practical effort is the one that turns those five into a schedule. A date merchant will tell you he’s feeling the pull to return. It will never tell you whether he’s checked a flight, asked for the day off, or looked up how long the drive takes. Guess who never asks about practical effort? The person selling you the reading. “Is he thinking about me” can be answered forever. “Has he booked anything” has one checkable answer, and you don’t need a deck to find it. I call it The Errand Test. A return that’s real starts running errands for the relationship: he picks a day, he makes the drive, he shows up for the boring Tuesday and not only the dramatic midnight. A message at 1am costs him thirty seconds. A plan costs him a Saturday, and he has to keep paying it every week. “But he talks about our future constantly. He has the whole thing planned out.” I believe you, and I believe he means it while he’s saying it. Danny meant every paint color. Planning out loud is a feeling. Practical effort is a receipt, and a receipt is the only one of the two you can check. Am I telling you that big talk is worthless? No. That night taught me I wanted a room with a door that closed, and I have one now, with my own name on the mailbox. On Tuesday nights I ask clients one question that gets me some long silences. What has he done, not said, in the last thirty days? Some people answer in a breath. Some sit there for a full minute and then laugh, because the list of things he said is a page long and the list of things he did fits on a sticky note. So if he’s back in touch, here’s what to watch. Not the length of his messages. Watch the ratio of talk to logistics. Three checks for any return: has he named a specific day, has he kept a plan that cost him a drive, a shift swap, or an evening with your friends, and has he done it twice without being reminded? A shift swap sounds small. It’s also a conversation with a boss, a favor owed, and a Saturday he won’t get back, which is why it tells you more than a paragraph at midnight. If the answers are no, that isn’t a verdict on the connection. The connection can be real while the relationship isn’t ready to hold it. It means the relationship hasn’t entered the physical world yet, and you don’t have to move into a house that only exists in conversation. If he isn’t in touch at all, The Errand Test still works. Point it at your own life and see which of your plans have dates on them. Whether or not he returns, a life with dates in it belongs to you. Letting go is a full answer, not a consolation prize. Ask yourself What has he said he would do, and what has he actually done with a date attached? Which of my own plans have I described for months without booking? What would practical effort look like from me, for me, this week? One thing to do today Pick one plan you’ve been describing for a while and give it a date and a time today. Put it on the calendar the way you’d put a dentist appointment. Love that is ready shows up with a date. Trust the timing. Keep becoming.Mara **P.S.** No lemon tree, though.
