It said: Danny comes back in April. I read it every morning while I brushed my teeth. I read it again at night, after the Charleston humidity had curled the corners, and when the ink faded I wrote it out fresh. Guess who wrote that note? Not a psychic. Me. The psychic supplied the month. I ran the advertising myself, twice a day. April came and went. Every time a date failed I paid for another reading, got another month, and wrote another note. I did that five times, six notes in all. The month changed every time, and the sentence never did, because the sentence was always about him. Here’s the part almost nobody talks about: the date merchants don’t stop at selling you a month. They sell you the words to say while you wait for it. There are whole accounts built on what the manifesting community calls SP affirmations. SP means specific person. The scripts read: *he thinks about me constantly, he is texting me right now, he can’t stop wanting me.* I call that The He-Sentence. It sounds like self-care and works like a subscription. You say it each morning, the phone stays dark, and the explanation you get is always the same: you didn’t believe it hard enough. So you pay for the advanced script, the next program, the coaching call about your resistance. That’s the Mirror Trap with a nicer font. “But the law of assumption says if I assume it, it has to happen.” I know the teaching, and I know why it comforts at midnight. Here’s the problem: he is a grown man with his own will, and no sentence in your mouth can make a decision in his head. A practice that only works if you control another adult isn’t a practice. It’s a lottery ticket you have to pay for again every day. Am I telling you affirmations are nonsense? I’d be a hypocrite with a kitchen cabinet. There’s an index card taped inside mine right now, next to Judge’s biscuits, and I read it while the kettle heats. The difference is the subject of the sentence. Mine is about me. It asks nothing of anybody who isn’t standing in my kitchen. So here’s your practice for the weekend: The Affirmation Anchor. One line, morning and night, seven days, Saturday, October 31 through Friday, November 6\. That’s fourteen readings at about two minutes a day. 1\. Write the line tonight. It has to pass two tests: you are the subject, and it stays true if he never texts again. “I can honor the connection and keep living” passes; “He’s coming back to me” fails both. 2\. Put it somewhere you already stand twice a day: the bathroom mirror, the coffee maker, the inside of a cabinet door. Not your phone, because the phone is where the checking lives. 3\. In the morning, read it out loud once, then do one small thing it points toward: a walk, a call to the friend you owe one, ten minutes on the project you shelved. 4\. At night, read it again and write one sentence about what you did today that belonged to you. 5\. If you catch yourself editing it into a He-Sentence, cross out the edit and write the original again. Catching it is the practice working. Tomorrow is Halloween. In Charleston that means ghost tours shuffling past my porch all evening, tourists holding lanterns up to the wrong houses, and Judge barking at every one. Your card gives Saturday a shape that doesn’t depend on whether the phone lights up. Both retrogrades run until November 13, and the He-Sentence sellers will work the whole window. Your seven days finish a week before that. The line doesn’t care how this story ends. If he returns, he meets you with a life of your own. If he doesn’t, you still have that life, and letting go is a full answer, not a consolation prize. Ask yourself If the line I repeat most often never came true, would it still have been worth saying? Who is the subject of the sentence I say to myself at 11pm? What would tomorrow morning look like if the card by my sink were the only thing I answered to? One thing to do today Before bed, write one line on an index card, with you as the subject, and tape it where you’ll see it when you wake up. I am the subject of my own sentence. Trust the timing.
